Osamu Kobayashi’s abstract paintings are formally reductive and take on a meditative quality, layering on blocks of colour with sweeping brush strokes that are suggestive of bodily contours. Employing playful, spontaneous colours, Kobayashi creates gestural, whimsical worlds that are calculated to produce scenes that range from familiar spaces to imaginary, impossible dimensions.
Kobayashi’s past solo exhibitions include “Hand in Hand” at LA Artcore (2021, Los Angeles, California) and “Mound” at 701 Center of Contemporary Art (2017, Columbia, South Carolina). His works have also been shown recently in various group exhibitions such as “Float… Fly… Transcend” at Alabama Contemporary Art Center (2021, Mobile, Alabama); “I & the Me” at The Shophouse (2021, Hong Kong) and “Palazzo Monti: Transatlantico” at Mana Contemporary (2020, Jersey City, New Jersey).
Kobayashi currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
