Sin Wai Kin’s solo exhibition “The False Window” at Surplus Space, Wuhan, Hubei Province will be on view from 7 November, 2026. Sin’s representative works from different stages of the artist’s practice will be on view alongside a new eponymous video work The False Window (2026).
“The exhibition’s title, The False Window, invokes the tension between the illusory and the real, suggesting that identity exists on an ambiguous threshold between reality and fiction. Sin often emphasizes this performative aspect by juxtaposing actual filming studios with simulated sets, reversing the power dynamics between performers and spectators while occasionally introducing a third-person perspective. The roles of narrator, viewer, and subject continually overlap, blurring the binary oppositions between reality and imagination, fact and fiction, as well as representation and performance. At the visual level, the use of stages and constructed sets creates an enhanced sense of theatricality, opening a gap between the subject and object for the viewer. This also emphasizes the tension between the object of the gaze and performativity. As subject positions continually shift within the narratives of moving images and performance, reality and fiction cease to function as opposing poles, emerging instead as interpenetrating layers.” —Surplus Space
