Curators: W. Eugene Smith, Aileen Mioko Smith and Lu Guang

“Hope & Pain” encompasses two groups of photographs that are united by their humanitarian compassion for the ordinary people so devastated by industrial pollution beyond their control. In 1971, W. Eugene Smith and his wife Aileen Mioko Smith moved to Minamata for three years to document the terrible effects of mercury poisoning on human health and the environment. Nearly 40 years later, Lu Guang, a recipient of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, has demonstrated the same humanistic spirit in his powerful photographs that tell the stories of countless people suffering in poverty and obscurity from industrial pollution.
