Yip Kin Bon is a mixed media artist, whose practice involves various approaches, including collecting, reading, sorting, integrating, and presenting in the form of a collage. In 2013, inspired by a politician’s discourse on Hong Kong’s future, he initiated the process of assembling Chinese characters from newspapers to transcribe the speech into text, marking the beginning of his artistic journey into newspaper-cutting. His work now delves into portraying crime and daily life in news media. A central ongoing project involves meticulously gathering Hong Kong newspapers, isolating specific texts or images for a touch of ironic absurdity and wry humor, encouraging viewers to reconsider everyday life in a new perspective.
Yip had his solo exhibitions at WMA space (Hong Kong, 2023) and 1a Space Gallery (Hong Kong, 2014). His works were also shown in group exhibitions, including the Jogja Biennale (Jogja, 2019), Hong Kong Heritage Museum (Hong Kong, 2018), Times Museum (Guangzhou, 2017), Arko Art Center (Seoul, 2016), Para Site (Hong Kong 2016 and 2015), the Pier 2 Art Centre (Kaoshiung, 2014), among others. He is the finalist of the 2024 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, the finalist of Hong Kong Human Right Art Prize 2021, and the finalist of WMA MASTERS 2019.
Yip currently lives and works in Hong Kong.
