So Wing Po will be taking part in the 14th Shanghai Biennale at the Power Station of Art opening on 9 November 2023 (until 31 March 2024), showcasing her mixed-media work Invisible Island (2021 – 2022). Coming from a family background of Chinese medicine, So collected seaweeds and plant samples from the coastal area of Hong Kong, and put them through a process called decellularization that erased all living cells and proteins in the organic objects. The samples are bleached until their natural colours are completely removed. The installation titled Invisible Island, is a metaphor for a chance of renewal for Hong Kong after the political turmoil and the coronavirus pandemic, the artist says.
