Yuk King Tan is a Chinese-New Zealand artist whose works spans diverse materials and media such as drawings, installations, photographs, video, performance. Her work is often poetic and frequently suggestive, unveiling interests in cultural delineations, global migration, and a personal relationship to world-defining issues such as value and economy. Living and working in Hong Kong since 2005, Tan has created works that negotiates issues such as value, politics and cultural systems within a constantly evolving post-colonial society.
Tan’s recent group exhibitions include “Elsewhere and nowhere else”, Te Tuhi, Auckland, New Zealand (2022); “Faultlines”, Present Projects, Hong Kong (2021); “Ruth Buchanan: The Scene In Which I Find Myself. Or, Where Does My Body Belong”, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand (2019); “Your Hotel Brain”, Christchurch Art Gallery, Christchurch, New Zealand (2017). She has also participated in international art biennales and triennales including the Auckland Triennale (2008); Guangzhou Triennial Videotage Selection (2005); Sao Paolo Art Biennial (2004); Baltic Triennial, Lithuania (2002) amongst others. In 2000, Tan was the artist in residence at the Camden Arts Centre, London. Her work has been collected by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongerewa, Wellington; Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, Auckland; Victoria University of Wellington; Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Christchurch.
Tan currently lives and works between Auckland, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
