Tiffany Sia (b. Hong Kong) is an artist, filmmaker and founder of Speculative Place, a residency and experimental project space on Lamma Island. She is the author of 咸濕 Salty Wet, a series of anti-travelogues on smut, affect and the history of Hong Kong. The first zine, in the disguise of a vintage softcore porn magazine, was published by Inpatient Press. A book-length sequel Too Salty Too Wet 更咸更濕, an oral history of tears, geography and necromancy, was released through Speculative Place Press in January 2021. Sia is the director of the short, experimental film Never Rest/Unrest, which screened at MoMA Documentary Fortnight and as part of a retrospective in the Propositions program at Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, among other festivals. Sia’s first institutional solo show was exhibited at Artists Space (New York). Her work has also been shown at Manchester International Festival (Manchester), The Douglas Hyde Gallery (Dublin), Shedhalle (Zurich), Chen’s (New York), Art at a Time Like This (New York) and Chinatown Soup (New York).
Committed to multidisciplinary works and collaborative inquiries, Sia’s practice focuses on confronting the politics of placehood, exploring the relationship between affect and temporality and challenging the boundaries of print and media distribution. She graduated from the Film and Electronic Arts program at Bard College and has been the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays scholarship. Sia’s writing and conversations have been published in Triple Canopy, Light Industry, LUX Moving Image, Screen Slate and more. She has spoken at Tai Kwun Contemporary Art (Hong Kong), The Lab (San Francisco), Printed Matter (New York), Asian American Writers Workshop (New York), Studio Voltaire (London), Hong Kong Baptist University (Hong Kong), Bard College (Annandale-on-Hudson), The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (Annandale-on-Hudson), Cooper Union (New York), soft/WALL/studs (Singapore) and others.
