Pilvi Takala uses performative interventions as a means to process social structures and question the normative rules and truths of our behaviour in different cultural contexts. Takala’s works emerge out of research in a certain community. Takala’s works clearly show that it is often possible to learn about the implicit rules of a social situation only by its disruption.
Takala has participated international exhibitions, her solo exhibitions include Bonniers Konsthall (Stockholm, Sweden, 2013); Kunsthalle Erfurt (Germany, 2012); Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki, Finland, 2009 and 2007). Her work has been shown in e.g. MoMA PS1 (New York, US, 2013) and New Museum (New York, US, 2012); Palais de Tokyo (Paris, France, 2013); Kunsthalle Basel (Germany, 2011); Witte de With (Rotterdam, Netherlands, 2010); and the 9th Istanbul Biennial (Turkey, 2005). Takala has been selected to represent Finland at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022.
Takala currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany and Helsinki, Finland.
