Since there is a dream
These small and cheap wall clocks are spares from the stock a small factory made for the CCTV programmes A Special Six-Plus-One and The Dictionary of Happiness; the Tiananmen Square replica in the picture is an abandoned tourist attraction in the county that is my hometown.
Years ago, having a photo taken with Tiananmen Square in the background was the dream of many villagers or even Chinese. The years passed. Many people have turned indifferent and numb in a state of collective unconsciousness, like these wall clocks with a fragmented picture that keep ticking until they stop.
Yet the dream exists in many people’s hearts.
Although we live in the Internet era, CCTV still has an indisputable place in those rural villages with little contact with the world. Being on TV is a big deal. If one makes it to CCTV, it will definitely be a dream-come-true.
Since there is a dream, people follow it. When a shoddy Tiananmen Square replica was built in the county, people could realise their dream in the county. When appearing on CCTV is out of question, a crudely made souvenir with the CCTV logo is an emblem of the dream.
Little do we know that in this coarse society, dream has become absurd and cheap.
