Jen Liu is a New York-based visual artist working in video, performance, and painting, on topics of national identity, economy, and the re-motivating of archival artifacts. She graduated from Oberlin College with a double major in Creative Writing and Studio Art (BA) in 1998 and California Institute of the Arts majoring in Fine Arts with a minor in Integrated Media (MFA) in 2001. Her video work, The Pink Detachment, premiered in the 2016 Berlinale Forum Expanded exhibition, and her recent performance commission, The Red Detachment of Women, premiered at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2015.
Liu’s works have been exhibited at SculptureCentre (New York, 2024), Today Art Museum (Beijing, 2023), Blindspot Gallery (Hong Kong, 2023), MIMA Digital Board (Los Angeles, 2023), The 13th Taipei Biennial which included a commissioned video work (Taipei, 2023), Power Station of Art (Shanghai, 2021), MAK Center for Art + Architecture in collaboration with LACMA (Los Angeles, 2021), Smithsonian Museum of American Art (Washington D.C., 2020), ACC (Gwangju, 2019), MoMA (New York, 2019), Kunsthal Rotterdam (Rotterdam, 2019), Times Museum (Guangdong, 2019), and Whitney Museum (New York, 2015), among others. In 2016, Jen Liu was artist-in-resident at Para Site, Hong Kong.
Liu currently lives and works in New York, USA.
