Cui Xiuwen graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1996. Her artwork focuses on addressing issues of sexuality and femininity in China. She is one of the most renowned artists in contemporary art in China, and one of the first Chinese artists exhibited at international museums such as Tate Modern. Cui’s artworks had also exhibited in museums worldwide.

2004
One Day in 2004 is a series of digitally manipulated photograph composed of a pile of doll-like girls in school uniform and a red scarf, injured in the leg or the ankle, and seemingly disposed into a pile. The recurring motif of the young girl in school uniform will develop into an alter ego of the artist in future series, visualising the marginalisation and pain of girlhood and femininity in the different stages of modern China.
